Israeli Forces Conduct New Ground Incursions Into Southern Syria
Syrian media reported that two Israeli military vehicles pushed forward along a road connecting the village of Saida al-Golan and the al-Basali farm in the southern Quneitra countryside, where they established a temporary checkpoint, searched passersby, and subsequently withdrew.
A separate incursion unfolded simultaneously in Daraa, where Israeli forces erected a temporary military checkpoint at the eastern entrance to the village of Maariya in the Yarmouk Basin area, subjecting both pedestrians and vehicles to searches before vacating the site.
Maariya Mayor Muwaffaq Mahmoud told media that approximately 150 Israeli soldiers, arriving aboard four military vehicles, had entered the area Sunday morning and established the checkpoint at the village's eastern entrance. No arrests were reported in connection with either operation.
Sunday's incursions are part of a broader and escalating Israeli military posture in southern Syria that has intensified dramatically since the fall of President Bashar al-Assad's regime in late 2024. Following Assad's ouster, Israel declared the 1974 Disengagement Agreement null and void, subsequently moving to occupy the buffer zone along the frontier — a unilateral step that has drawn widespread regional criticism.
Israeli forces have since maintained a tempo of near-daily strikes and ground operations across Syria's southern provinces, with Quneitra and Daraa bearing the brunt of the military activity.
