Syria Holds Parliamentary Votes in Northeast

(MENAFN) Polls opened Sunday across select districts in northeastern and northern Syria for the election of members to the country's People's Assembly, marking another milestone in the nation's fragile post-conflict democratic transition, the Higher Committee for People's Assembly Elections announced.

Voting got underway in the Hasakah and Qamishli districts of Hasakah province, as well as in the Ain al-Arab district of Aleppo province, a state news agency reported, citing the committee.

The contest figures vary sharply by district. In Ain al-Arab, 12 candidates are vying for two seats within an electoral body of 100 members. In Hasakah, 13 candidates are competing for three seats among 150 eligible electors. In Qamishli, seven candidates are running for four seats in an electoral body of 198 members.

In Hasakah's al-Malikiyah district, however, the allocated seats were filled without a vote after only two candidates registered — rendering the contest uncontested, the news agency reported.

Polling is scheduled to run until around midday, with a potential one-hour extension if minimum turnout thresholds are not met. Vote counting is set to begin immediately upon the close of polls, with preliminary results expected before the end of the day.

A Nation Still Completing Its First Post-Assad Election Cycle
Sunday's vote is part of a broader, phased electoral process that began in October 2025, when Syria held its first parliamentary elections following the fall of the Bashar al-Assad regime in late 2024.

That initial round was not without setbacks. In August 2025, the Syrian election commission postponed voting in Suwayda, Raqqa, and Hasakah provinces, citing "security challenges." Raqqa eventually held its elections in March of this year, with four candidates securing seats after voter turnout surpassed 90%.

The 210-member People's Assembly serves a 30-month renewable term within a four-year transitional framework, with the possibility of a one-year extension. The body carries sweeping legislative authority — from drafting and passing laws to ratifying international treaties, approving the state budget, and issuing amnesties.
