Syria's UN Envoy Says Israel Deliberately Destabilizing Damascus
Speaking before the UN Security Council's open debate on the Middle East, Olabi acknowledged that Syria's security-building efforts had earned broad international approval — but insisted they "are currently being undermined only by the Israeli occupation and its criminal practices in southern Syria."
He pressed the charge further, asserting that "Israeli occupation forces are seeking every possible means to provoke the Syrian people."
Fragile Progress, Persistent Threats
Despite the pointed rhetoric directed at Israel, Olabi conceded that the wider regional landscape had shown tentative signs of improvement — while cautioning that the window for peace remains precarious.
"Although the situation in the region today has improved in recent weeks, the final settlement of the conflict has not yet been achieved, and the situation remains vulnerable to renewed deterioration," he said.
Olabi extended rare public praise to international mediators for their role in steadying the region, declaring the world must "thank all the countries playing a mediating role, especially the friendly state of Pakistan, along with the Gulf Arab states, Egypt, and Türkiye."
The Syrian envoy also broke from a traditionally cautious diplomatic tone by explicitly endorsing Washington's engagement in de-escalation efforts, singling out President Donald Trump for recognition and welcoming the extension of the ceasefire in Lebanon.
Underscoring the stakes of the moment, Olabi issued a sobering reminder: "Over the past few weeks, the Middle East has witnessed a grave existential threat."
Hezbollah, West Bank, and the Two-State Solution
On the issue of non-state armed groups, Olabi threw his weight behind Beirut's crackdown on Hezbollah's independent military operations, welcoming "the decision of the Lebanese government rejecting any military or security actions launched from Lebanese territory outside the framework of legitimate state institutions, including the weapons of Hezbollah."
Pivoting to the occupied West Bank, he issued a firm warning against escalating Israeli unilateralism, urging an immediate halt to "the grave escalation and unilateral and illegal Israeli measures in the occupied West Bank" — and calling on all parties to refrain from any actions that could further erode the prospects for a two-state solution.
