Syria’s War-Damaged School Restored

(MENAFN) Classes have resumed at a newly renovated school in Syria's Idlib province, reviving a building that was once used as a prison by regime forces before being bombed — and now stands as a symbol of post-war reconstruction.

The school, located in the town of Muhambil, was restored through a joint effort between the Asma Kopru International Student Association and the Sefire-i Alem International Student Association, following the fall of the Bashar al-Assad regime. The initiative was launched after local residents who had returned to the area appealed to Turkish civil society organizations for support.

The rebuilt facility — now named Hikmet Primary School — comprises 11 classrooms, one science room, and two administrative offices, and is expected to serve around 800 students across morning and afternoon shifts.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Türkiye's Aleppo Consul General Muammer Hakan Cengiz framed the project as part of a wider national commitment to Syria's recovery.

"We are at the beginning of a new struggle here -- the struggle to rebuild Syria. Our support from Türkiye in the field of education continues," Cengiz said.

Officials at the event underscored the scale of destruction inflicted on Syria's educational infrastructure during years of conflict, stressing that rebuilding schools is central to the country's broader reconstruction — and to the future of a generation shaped by war.
