Syria Moves to Designate Al-Hol Camp as "Closed Military Zone"
A Syrian TV channel, citing the Hasakah Media Directorate, reported that internal security forces have imposed a blanket prohibition on anyone approaching or entering the area under any circumstances.
The directorate issued a stark warning to would-be violators: those who breach the restrictions face immediate arrest and referral to the judiciary, with penalties potentially carrying severe prison sentences.
The declaration follows earlier statements suggesting the camp had already been emptied. In February, Fadi al-Qassem — a Syrian Foreign Ministry official with direct responsibility for Al-Hol — told Anadolu that the camp had been fully evacuated. Iraq's National Security Advisory subsequently corroborated that account, confirming the site had been completely dismantled following the transfer of more than 5,600 families — approximately 22,000 individuals — to Iraqi territory.
Al-Hol camp carries a complex and turbulent history. Originally erected near the Syrian-Iraqi border in Hasakah province to accommodate Iraqi refugees displaced by the 2003 US invasion of Iraq, the site was later seized by ISIS (Daesh) in 2014. It subsequently became a detention hub for suspected members of the extremist group and their families, even as thousands of displaced Syrian and Iraqi civilians remained confined within its boundaries.
