Ex-US Counterterrorism Chief Says US Backed Terrorism in Syria for Israel

(MENAFN) Joe Kent, former head of the US National Counterterrorism Center, has claimed that the United States worked directly with Al-Qaeda and ISIS to destabilize Syria and overthrow former President Bashar Assad. Kent, who resigned in protest over the US-Israeli conflict with Iran, described these actions as part of a broader pattern of US wars conducted on Israel’s behalf, including the Second Iraq War and the Syrian Civil War.

According to Kent, Washington collaborated not only with Israeli interests but also sought to mobilize Sunni communities in Syria, which, he said, contributed to the rise of ISIS. He argued that early US operations supporting opposition forces, including the so-called Free Syrian Army, relied heavily on jihadist groups, with Al-Qaeda initially and ISIS later proving the most effective.

Kent explained that ISIS eventually became uncontrollable, prompting the US to intervene militarily in Syria under the pretext of counterterrorism. He also claimed that these operations paved the way for the eventual collapse of Assad’s government in late 2024 and the ascent of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), a reorganized Al-Qaeda offshoot.

Criticizing the leadership of HTS and the interim Syrian government under Ahmed al-Sharaa, Kent noted that despite the group’s history of terrorism, the US still recognized his administration as legitimate.
