Inmates Break Out of Prison in PKK/YPG-Held Syrian Area

(MENAFN) Inmates have broken out of a detention facility in northern Syria's Aleppo province, in territory controlled by PKK/YPG militants operating as the SDF, a news agency confirmed Wednesday amid mounting violence in the region.

A Syrian security official informed the news agency that detainees escaped from a holding facility located in the Al-Shaqif district, currently under SDF administration. The official declined to disclose how many prisoners remain at large.

In parallel developments, the Syrian Civil Defense reported extracting 850 civilians from Aleppo by 12:30 pm local time (0930GMT), attributing the emergency operation to worsening humanitarian circumstances and bombardment by SDF forces.

Emergency responders established two evacuation sites—one in the Al-Awarid district and another on Zuhur Street—as growing numbers of residents abandoned neighborhoods subjected to SDF artillery fire, according to the agency.

The Aleppo Internal Transport Company announced it mobilized its entire fleet and workforce to maximum readiness, deploying buses at full strength to relocate affected civilians and displaced persons from conflict zones to provisional refuge centers.

Company officials stated the emergency protocols were designed "to ensure civilians' safety and help ease their suffering amid the ongoing events."

The escalation prompted Syria's armed forces to declare that SDF military installations in Aleppo's Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafieh districts constitute "legitimate targets" following what the military described as the faction's aggression and "massacres" throughout the governorate.

The military announcement followed renewed SDF bombardment of civilian areas in Aleppo Wednesday morning—the second consecutive day of attacks—occurring one day after SDF strikes killed at least five people and wounded 16 others across Aleppo on Tuesday.

The army's Operations Authority designated both neighborhoods as restricted military zones effective 3 pm local time (1200GMT), urging civilians to distance themselves from SDF positions and imposing a total movement prohibition within both areas starting at that hour.

On March 10, Syria's presidency revealed the ratification of an accord governing the SDF's absorption into government structures, reinforcing the nation's territorial integrity and opposing any separatist initiatives.

Syrian officials assert that in subsequent months, the SDF has demonstrated no meaningful compliance with the agreement's provisions.
