Syria imposes temporary lockdown in Latakia following deadly incidents

(MENAFN) Syrian authorities introduced a short-term curfew in the coastal city of Latakia on Tuesday in response to a series of violent incidents that resulted in deaths, according to official statements.

The Latakia Governorate announced that the Internal Security Command ordered the restriction to take effect at 5:00 p.m. local time on Tuesday and to remain in place until 6:00 a.m. on Wednesday. The measure applies across the city for the duration specified.

Officials clarified that the curfew does not extend to emergency situations. Medical staff, ambulance services, and firefighting teams are exempt from the restrictions. Residents were instructed to comply fully with the directive and cooperate with security forces, with authorities cautioning that breaches would result in legal consequences.

An Interior Ministry spokesperson stated that the government will not accept unlawful or reckless behavior under any circumstances, stressing the ministry’s responsibility to safeguard all citizens through the rule of law and state authority. He urged Latakia residents to respect legal boundaries and refrain from actions that could threaten public safety or national cohesion, including incitement, irresponsible individual conduct, or aligning with groups seeking to provoke disorder and instability.

The spokesperson further emphasized that the state firmly opposes vandalism and any attacks against civilians or their property, labeling such actions as blatant legal violations that will be addressed through judicial measures. “Individual mistakes cannot be generalized or used to justify further violations,” he added, according to official accounts.

The curfew was imposed after armed assailants targeted security forces on Sunday while they were deployed to protect demonstrations in multiple coastal and central cities. The protests had been organized by an Alawite religious authority and included calls for a federal system.

Authorities reported that the violence resulted in four fatalities and left 108 people injured, including both members of the security forces and civilians, in Latakia.
