Guterres denounces deadly mosque attack in Syria’Homa

(MENAFN) The head of the United Nations on Friday strongly criticized a deadly attack targeting a mosque in the Syrian city of Homs, as authorities in Damascus continue efforts to restore stability across the country.

In remarks cited in an official statement, the UN chief said he “unequivocally" condemned the assault and stressed that “Attacks against civilians and places of worship are unacceptable,” adding that those behind the incident must be identified and brought to justice.

The statement also noted that Syrian authorities have condemned the attack themselves and reiterated their determination to continue counterterrorism efforts.

"The Secretary-General extends his condolences to the families of those killed and expresses his sympathy to all those injured, wishing them a prompt and full recovery," the statement added.
Reports indicated that at least eight people lost their lives and 18 others were wounded in the attack, which struck the Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib Mosque on Al-Khodari Street in the Wadi al-Dhahab district of Homs.

The incident comes as Syria’s new leadership moves to reinforce security nationwide and track down elements linked to the former ruling system, which has been accused of fueling instability.

Bashar al-Assad, who ruled Syria for nearly a quarter century, fled to Russia, bringing an end to decades of Baath Party rule that began in 1963. In January, a transitional governing authority led by President Ahmad al-Sharaa was established to oversee the country’s next phase.
